TETRA Radio VS DMR Radio: Which Do You Need?

Comparison Between Terrestrial Trunked Radio TETRA & DMR Radio

Here we will go through which radio wireless communication solutions your organization needs, by comparing the definition, types, and uses of TETRA & DMR.

Tetra Radio

What is TETRA?

TETRA stands for Terrestrial Trunked Radio. Which is an ETSI European digital mobile radio communications standard that was developed in 2012. It uses 4 slots of TDMA technology (on time-division multiple access technology). And primarily used for professional mobile radio ( PMR application ).

Who Needs TETRA Radio?

It is designed for mission critical communication, and since it uses lower frequencies and provides a longer range. it is beneficial for:

  • Public Safety
  • Transportation
  • Utilities
  • Government
  • Military
  • PAMR
  • Commercial & Industry
  • Oil & Gas.

DMR Radio

What is DMR?

DMR stands for Digital Mobile Radio. It was developed in 2005.  Which is considered an ETSI digital radio standard for professional mobile radio (PMR application), that can serve both commercial and government agencies. It uses 2 slots of on-time-division multiple access ( TDMA technology ). It is used all over the world and has more advanced voice and data features than analogue PMR systems.

Who Needs DMR Radio?

DMR unlike TETRA provides only trunked, it has 3 Tier types:

DMR Tier I: Unlicensed: It doesn’t require a license, is usually known as Walkie Talkies, and is designed for non-critical communications, it also defines a maximum power of less than 0.5 W per radio transmission, low power, and mainly used personal or small business uses like:

  • Personal use
  • Supermarkets
  • Health & wellness centers.

DMR Tier II: Conventional: It requires a license. It is a communication service much more complex than Tier I, including advanced call service, telephone interconnection, dispatch connection, and secure communication. The power is higher, and the communication range is wide but not wider than TETRA. For example, the maximum power of Hytera’s best-selling radio is usually 5 W.  It is beneficial for:

  • Medium-Sized Enterprises.
  • Commercial & Industry
  • Oil & Gas.

DMR Tier III: Trunked: It is a trunked radio system, which means that radios are automatically assigned to frequencies rather than having a fixed frequency, allowing for more efficient sharing of available radio channels among users. Tier III is designed for large networks with thousands of users. It is a cost-effective solution compared to TETRA trunked radio. Both serve the same industries; it can be used for:

  • Public Safety
  • Transportation
  • Utilities
  • Government
  • Military
  • PAMR
  • Commercial & Industry
  • Oil & Gas.
